The Jack and Paula Kirtland Scholarship was first awarded in 2015. Jack wanted to memorialize his wife by recognizing an outstanding high school senior who excels in sports and academics. This year's recipient, William Bell from Jamestown High School, embodies the scholar athlete model. Bell has been a member of the Varsity Golf Team all four years. As a freshman and sophomore, his Jamestown High School Team won the state tournament. While the team didn't repeat this championship during his junior and senior year, William excelled individually and was recognized for a state individual award both years. William was the team captain his senior year, and was named Conference 18 Player of the Year his 10th and 12th grade year. He was also named Peninsula Golfer of the Year.
Bell has a 3.9 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society, the Science Honor Society, the English Honor Society and received an Academic Honors award for Trigonometry.
While William's achievements in golf and his grades were the driving factor for his selection, the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg was also touched by his compassion for others. William puts others first and dedicates himself to helping others and being a true friend. He volunteers at a local hospital and aspires to be a doctor. Bell will attend college at Texas A and M in the Fall.
