Career Cafés are where youth learn to see how their education is relevant in the business world, beyond the blackboard, busy hallways and classrooms.
This year a caring and devoted York County school counselor, Mrs. Lubrano of Magruder Elementary developed and engineered a very special and unique program which was made available to the children at her school as an alternative to eating lunch in the cafeteria. The students would bring their lunch into a designated classroom and discussions were in full swing with Mrs. Lubrano's eager students. This Café experience not only offered a fun and relaxed atmosphere, it created vibrant discussions with a focus on various career field topics. The topics were deliberately career focused blended with life skills that offered tangible examples that inspired use of critical thinking skills, as well as workplace readiness activities and discussions. "Children are hungry for this kind of cognitive stimulation and real life discussion; Career Café was the perfect format to invite the students to engage and have fun."
In an effort to expand the program, Mrs. Lubrano who is Magruder's school counselor has reached out to several of her trusted community leaders and partners in Williamsburg in order to broaden the information shared with her students. These included speakers with various business and community backgrounds to include; medical, military, service, financial and many more which was able to reach segments of the youth population that may not venture outside of their community.
When asked if Career Café will be a reoccurring experience for her students, she had this to say; "Absolutely! Career Cafe will be back next year. Our students and teachers have loved our different speakers each week. It gives them the opportunity to learn about various professions that they might otherwise not be exposed to. Each week is a new adventure and they look forward to it."
Marauder Elementary schools' Career Café is solely a volunteer based program which does not require additional funding from the school board.
