'Revolutionary Friends' presented by DAR

Regent Virginia Snyder Lee and Carolyn Gaertner, recording secretary, Williamsburg Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) presented the book, Revolutionary Friends, to Valerie Holt, school counselor, Upper School, Walsingham Academy on behalf of Mrs. Cheryl Shrout, librarian, Lower School during the awards ceremony on May 30. This book tells of the meeting and the extraordinary friendship of General George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette. Aid from France in the form of supplies and troops helped turn the tide and win the American Revolution for our patriotic ancestors.

On June 5, 2015, the French ship "Hermione" will arrive in Yorktown after a transatlantic crossing and sail up the eastern coast of the United States. She is a 210 ft., three-masted Tall Ship - an exact replica of the ship that brought Lafayette to America in 1780. There will be free public tours of the ship as well as interactive education activities for all to learn not only about the ship, but rekindle and highlight the strong alliance between France and the United States throughout history.

In 2015, our national society is celebrating 125 years of DAR service around the world. Our chapter is honored to be part of this celebration and the arrival of the ship Hermione in Virginia. Donation of the book to all James City County, public and private elementary, middle and regional libraries is part of the NSDAR Celebrate 125/Hermione service project by the Williamsburg Chapter, NSDAR.

Vive le France et les Etats-Unis!!
