Historian Martha McCartney has uncovered new information about the life of 18th century botanist John Clayton, who served as clerk of court in Gloucester County. Clayton was responsible for one of the first inventories of our flora and for his international stature among botanists. Martha McCartney has written books about colonial history,has received historic preservation awards, and has been employed by Colonial Williamsburg and the National Park Service as archaeological consultant. A new book on the history of Mathews County will be out soon.
