WILLIAMSBURG, VA, May 26, 2017 - Emma Yeats, senior at Lafayette High School, and Olivia Hazelwood, senior at Warhill High School, each received a $1,000 general scholarship from The Woman's Club of Williamsburg-GFWC.
The non-profit Woman's Club of Williamsburg awards scholarships to local high school students to assist young women in obtaining a higher education to prepare them to become future leaders. Students are selected based on academic standing, leadership ability and extracurricular activities.
Olivia Hazelwood exemplifies a well-rounded scholar-athlete involved in her community, and will be the first in her family to attend college. She maintains a high grade point average, and demonstrates leadership ability as section leader, treasurer and secretary for the school orchestra and president of the French Honor Society. She swims and plays tennis and volleyball. In addition to her school activities, Olivia volunteers at the Arc of Greater Williamsburg, the Salvation Army, and the Williamsburg Christian Retreat Center. She plans to attend the University of Virginia in the fall, where she hopes to major in biology in preparation for a career at a neonatal doctor.
Emma Yeats embodies academic excellence, leadership ability and community activism. She has received academic awards in both math and social studies, and will receive the Advanced Studies Diploma with Governor's Seal. She founded the Lafayette High Decorating Committee and plays tennis and softball. Emma serves as a homebound and private tutor to classmates, is very active in the school's Key Club and was a teen catechist at her church for two years. Emma will attend the University of Virginia where she plans to major in aerospace or mechanical engineering.
In addition to scholarships, the club also provides financial support for other local, national and international humanitarian organizations.
