The Woman's Club of Williamsburg-GFWC awards three $1,000 scholarships

WILLIAMSBURG, VA, May 26, 2016 - The Woman's Club of Williamsburg-GFWC has awarded their 2016 scholarships to Nicole Harney, Alexis Brender A Brandis, and Briana Dillard. Each student will receive $1,000.

Scholarship winners were chosen based on their academic standing, leadership ability, extracurricular activities, and the essay each submitted on "What This Scholarship Means to Me." Funding for the scholarships was raised by Woman's Club events throughout the year.

Nicole Harney is graduating from Jamestown High School and plans to attend Shenandoah University to study music therapy. She is in the school's French Club, Key Club and Thespian Society. She performs in the school orchestra, string quartet, jazz band and marching band, and composes and arranges music. Nicole is also active in her church, where she is involved in the music and children's ministries.

Alexis Brender A Brandis is graduating from Lafayette High School and plans to attend the College of William and Mary to become a medical laboratory technician. Alexis is involved in track, cheerleading, and gymnastics and is a member of the Math Honor Society, the German Club and the Pep Club. She is also active in her community as a volunteer at the Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex, and has participated in Salvation Army, March of Dimes and Wounded Warrior Project activities.

Briana Dillard is graduating from Bruton High School and will attend Christopher Newport University to study psychology and social work. She is very involved in a variety of types of dance and is a feature twirler for her high school. She is also a member of Future Business Leaders of America and Distributive Education Clubs of America, and has served as a teacher's assistant, school store manager and credit union teller. She is involved in the teen ministry for her church and volunteers in a variety of community outreach activities.

The non-profit Woman's Club of Williamsburg-GFWC is a group of women with a common interest in community welfare and philanthropic projects. The Club provides financial support for a variety of local, national and international humanitarian organizations, including the annual scholarships for local teens.
