U.S. Senators Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine to be Honorary Co-Chairs of the Green v. New Kent 50th Anniversary Commemoration

U.S. Senators Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine (both D-VA) will be the Honorary Co-Chairs of the 50th Anniversary Commemoration of Charles C. Green, et al. v. County School Board of New Kent County, Virginia, et al. decided by the United States Supreme Court on May 27, 1968.

The Green decision established the duty of the school boards to affirmatively eliminate all vestiges of state-imposed segregation and further placed an affirmative duty on school boards to integrate schools.

Green is recognized as the most significant public school desegregation decision of the Supreme Court following Brown v. Board of Education, changing the practice of school systems throughout the nation.

Tentative Event Schedule:
Saturday, April 28, 2018 Strong Women and Strong Men Exhibit - Open House 11 am to 5 pm at the New Kent 1909 Historic Courthouse.

Saturday, May 5, 2018: Introduction to the Green Case, 2 to 4 pm at Watkins Elementary School will include a panel of students, parents, and teachers discussing their personal experiences from the 1968 decision. The Kids Corner, 2 pm at Watkins Elementary School will present music and the story of the Green case.

Tuesday, May 15, 2018: The History of George W. Watkins Elementary School 7 pm at Watkins Elementary School will include a tour of the school, and student presentations. Hosted by the Watkins Elementary School PTO.

Sunday, May 20, 2018: Celebrating Dr. Green's Legacy in Song, 3 pm at New Kent High School, featuring the One Voice Chorus Ensemble. Hosted by the New Kent Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)

Sunday, May 27, 2018: Civil Rights in the 21st Century and Beyond, 2 to 5 pm at New Kent High School. This is the culminating event of the 50th Anniversary. It will include a film on Green vs. County School Board of New Kent County decision and a panel discussion on "Civil Rights in the 21st Century & Beyond."

All events are free and open to the public.
