Walsingham Academy announced a historic $500,000.00 gift, given by Robert J. Fiscella, to create opportunities for academic excellence by means of new student scholarships. The gesture marks the largest individual gift in the school's sixty-nine year history. "In making this gift, Robert Fiscella is expressing, with great conviction, his belief in Walsingham's mission and in the imperative of investing in today's youth as tomorrow's future," said Academy President Sister Mary Jeanne Oesterle. "The gift represents the strongest possible endorsement of Walsingham's long-standing tradition of academic excellence and spiritual and personal development."
"This truly is a monumental gift in Walsingham's history, enabling our school to expand its scholarship offerings, which in turn helps in the recruitment and retention of qualified students," said Walsingham Academy's Director of Advancement Devin Arnold. "A strong endowment allows Walsingham to continue to pursue critical initiatives that enhance our position as the leader in private education."
As a distinguished military graduate of the City College of New York in 1946, Robert Fiscella received a regular Army commission training as a pilot, achieved the rank of Captain, and also served in World War II. Fiscella and his brother Ben Fiscella founded B & F Contracting Company, now Riverdale Management Company, responsible for building nearly 9,000 homes in Newport News, Hampton, and Williamsburg. As the great-uncle of a Walsingham Academy fourth grader, Mr. Fiscella has had the opportunity to experience first-hand the impact of a Walsingham Academy education. "I feel that this is the single greatest thing I have done in my life, ensuring that future generations of students receive a Walsingham education," said Mr. Fiscella of his decision to create the scholarship fund.
"On behalf of the Sisters of Mercy, students, Board of Trustees, faculty, and the Administration at Walsingham Academy, I'd like to thank Robert Fiscella for his passionate support for the Academy's mission and his generous contribution to our learning community," said Sister Mary Jeanne Oesterle. "We are all blessed to be a part of such an amazing place. Each of the Academy's divisions, preschool, primary, middle and upper school, offer the best teaching and learning experiences every day. The Robert J. Fiscella Scholarship Fund will enable more students to benefit from a Walsingham education."
