West Point High School Does “Hairspray”

The West Point High School Drama Club will be performing, "Hairspray," The Broadway Musical, this year on March 8th, 9th and 10th at the Robinson/Olsson Civic Auditorium at West Point High School, in West Point. Each show will begin at 7:00 p.m. and tickets may be ordered ahead of time or purchased at the door.
Developed in America, this musical is based in the 60's, featuring 1960's style music and "downtown" rhythm and blues. Set in Baltimore, Maryland in 1962, plump teen Tracy's dream is to be on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Dean Show, similar to American Bandstand. Although bullied about her weight, Tracy wins a role on the show and becomes a celebrity overnight, being accepted based on her talent and personality. It also leads to social change. Only one show a month is devoted to 'negro day" when the African-Americans dance on the TV show. Tracy campaigns for the show's integration and acceptance of individual differences.
In the end, all are accepted and the show is integrated for the first time.
This hilarious family musical, written by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, will bring back memories from the 60's and make new ones for those born later. The music, written by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, will keep you moving in your seat and will run through your head for days afterwards.
Cast members have been rehearsing and sharpening their skills from singing and dancing to providing special lighting and sound for the production. With musical accompaniment from the orchestra, backstage crews, chorus singing, to painting the set, there are numerous students involved in this project.
Families need to come out and enjoy our show, providing support for these talented students, to go home with laughter in their hearts and a little lesson on the acceptance of differences and the importance of equality.
