Williamsburg, Va. - Williamsburg Area Meals on Wheels has received $3,000 from the Food Lion Charitable Foundation just in time to help feed local residents. Williamsburg Area Meals on Wheels will use the gift to purchased hot, noon-time meals for Williamsburg-area residents.
"Providing daily basic nutrition to local residents in need is our ultimate goal. Without grants from Corporations and their foundations like the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation, Meals on Wheels would not be able to continue providing meals to everyone in need without a waiting list," said Catherine Upton, Meals on Wheels Executive Director.
The purpose of Meals on Wheels is to provide hot, nutritious, home delivered noon-time meals to adults unable to provide meals for themselves and have no one available to assist them. The program is based on need rather than age or income status. We have five projects that help us fight hunger in our community, including hot noontime meals, emergency packages twice a year to be used when volunteers cannot deliver daily meals, weekend meals to select clients with no other resources, breakfast for those most in need and a quarterly nutrition education newsletter. Wheels on Wheels staffs about 145 dedicated volunteers who deliver the daily meals.
Established in 2001, the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding the hungry in the communities it serves. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $9 million in grants.
