Williamsburg Rotary Club tours local manufacturing of super-sized Liebherr trucks

Williamsburg Rotary Club members were invited by member Joachim (Jo) Janka, President of Liebherr Mining Equipment, to tour the company's plant in Newport News. The tour showed the construction of enormous trucks and excavators, starting with basic steel slabs and ending with the super-sized mining trucks that is the company's principal product. The photo shows one of three Rotary tour groups standing in front of one of the trucks under construction. When making super-sized trucks you need a super-sized plant. Liebherr has two buildings--a manufacturing plant and a large spare parts warehouse area--each stretching more than half mile from entry door to the completed product. Workers continued through the evening tour, arc welding and moving with apparent ease multi-ton pieces from one staging area to another. A short video preceded the tour, followed by dinner and a presentation on the Liebherr family and a history of the company from 1952 to its present position as a major player in the global economy as a producer of heavy equipment.
