Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra Season Begins Sept. 25 at Williamsburg’s Kimball Theatre

The Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) will begin its 2017-2018 season on Sept. 25 in the historic Kimball Theatre. This year's season highlights include a combination of masterworks, popular pieces and compositions by a number of today's significant composers.

In discussing the season's start, WSO Music Director Janna Hymes shared her excitement about what is to come by saying "It is always exciting to start a new season and this year is no exception. We open the concert with Bounce -a brilliant piece called by American composer Adam Schoenberg - followed by the stunning Sibelius Concerto played by violinist Jennifer Koh, and ending with Dvorak's melancholic New World Symphony. It's a wonderful start to our 34th season. There is an energy to starting the new season- an energy that permeates throughout the year with our orchestra. They love to play and they have a warm attachment to the Williamsburg community."

WSO will present its season opening concerts on September 25 and 26 at the Kimball Theatre, the first of five Masterworks Series programs.

A new partnership between WSO and a long-standing Williamsburg cultural event -- An Occasion for the Arts -- will bring four multimedia concerts to Williamsburg. Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra Presents "Symphony at the Movies: Harry Potter, Star Wars, Trolls and More!" will take place at the Kimball Theatre Saturday, Oct. 7 at 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 8 at 1:30 and 3:00 p.m. These special performances will feature familiar music that the whole family will love, from features films that include Harry Potter and Star Wars. These multimedia concerts will highlight music from film scores with graphics projected on a screen above the orchestra, and popcorn will be served to the audience.

"Audiences have a strong reaction to film music," stated Janna Hymes. "Whether they are reminded of the actual film, actors, or scenes, or remember where they saw the film and who they were with, or whether it is just the pure power of the music, movie music is emotional. It helps to tell a story and the pieces I have chosen for this concert are examples of some of the finest film music ever written. This is a concert to be enjoyed by all audiences as it includes something for everyone."
