Julia Moffitt, a Williamsburg fitness trainer and yoga instructor, placed second among female runners and eighth among all runners in an event halfway around the world: the annual Mongolia Sunrise to Sunrise Ultramarathon, a 100-kilometer (62-mile) trail run. The run took place this month (Aug. 3) in the Hovsgol National Park in northern Mongolia near the border with Siberia.
This month's run was the third Mongolian ultramarathon in which Ms Moffitt had taken part. She completed 100 kilometers in 2014 and made 65 kilometers in 2015. To complete the run requires unusual fitness and stamina. The trail winds through mountainous terrain with several ascents and descents at elevations ranging from 5,400 feet to 7,550 feet above sea level. On the flatter steppes of the area, Mongolian nomads with their ponies and herds of yak and reindeer are common sights.
A Swiss environmental foundation, EcoLeap, in Geneva, has sponsored the ultramarathon for eighteen
years. With funds raised from the run Ecoleap makes grants to help preserve the pristine northern Mongolia wilderness.
Ms Moffitt, 38 years old, brought her personal training and yoga instruction to Williamsburg when she moved her last year from Key West, Florida. She had lived there since 2000 after graduation from Tufts University. She is certified as a fitness trainer by the National Academy of Sports Medicine. She had been born in Korea and raised in New York City and Connecticut by her parents, who retired to Williamsburg in 1999. She offers fitness training and yoga instruction to private clients in their homes and teaches classes at several fitness centers.
