New book on Mathews history to be launched

The Mathews County Historical Society, Inc. announces the publication of its newest book, Mathews County, Virginia: Lost Landscapes, Untold Stories by noted author and historian Martha W. McCartney. The book describes the county's settlement and development from prehistoric to modern times. This comprehensive history of the county, the first of its kind, contains information drawn from local records, overseas archives and record repositories throughout the United States. Although the bulk of Mathews County's antebellum court records were destroyed in 1865, a wealth of reliable information still exists.

The historical society will launch Ms. McCartney's latest accomplishment at a presentation given by her and reception in her honor on Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at Kingston Parish House, 370 Main Street, Mathews. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and for signing. Refreshments will be served. The event is free and open to the public.

Ms. McCartney, a graduate of the College of William and Mary and historian for the Virginia Research Center for Archaeology, has worked as an independent consultant since 1986. She was project historian for the National Park Service's Jamestown Archaeological Assessment and is the author of nine books. She has received six historic preservation awards, including the DAR's prestigious National History Award. The NPS chose her book, Jamestown Island: An American Legacy, "best in the field" in the book/cultural history category. She is a resident of Williamsburg and Mathews County.

The book will be sold locally at Mathews County Visitor and Information Center or may be ordered by mailing a check (payable to MCHS) to MCHS Attn: Book Order, P.O. Box 855, Mathews, VA 23109. Hardcover books are $35.00 plus $7.96 for Virginia sales tax and shipping. Soft cover books are $25 plus $7.43 for tax and shipping. For more information, visit www.mathewscountyhistoricalsociety.org.

Note: Books are not expected to be delivered until very close to launch day. A copy will be sent to the Virginia Gazette for review.
