WJCC Well Represented at the District VIII Band Concerts

The WJCC Schools were well represented this year at the District VIII Middle and High School Band concerts, which were held on February 4 at Woodside High School in Newport News. District VIII is a sprawling region that includes 12 Virginia counties and cities with a population of more than 600,000 people. Nearly a thousand talented musicians auditioned on January 14 to earn a spot in the prestigious event, but only 278 were selected. Of these, a whopping 49 came from the six schools in the WJCC system, including 14 from Jamestown High, 13 from Warhill High, 3 from Lafayette High, 9 from Hornsby Middle, 7 from Berkeley Middle, and 3 from Toano Middle. In preparation for their performances, the students enjoyed an intense, three-day band clinic with one of three award-winning, nationally-recognized band conductors. Tiffany Hitz of Fairfax, Virginia, conducted the Middle School Band, Arris Golden from the University of North Carolina conducted the High School Concert Band, and Brian Balmages of Towson University conducted the High School Symphonic Band. All three bands received a well-deserved standing ovation from a very appreciative crowd.
