York River State Park 5K returns on Saturday

The York River State Park 5K returns on Saturday, August 27. A Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix Event, the 5K will support Friends of York River State Park, a nonprofit organization that supplies funds, materials, and labor for projects at York River State Park, as well as Walsingham Academy's Athletic Booster Club.

"We are really excited to be a part of this great event," said Walsingham Athletic Director Neil Bailey. "York River State Park is such a wonderful community resource, and it means a lot to us that our event can help its mission."

The race features a race day $30 registration fee with the first 200 runners to register receiving a commemorative race shirt and race bag. The race will also feature food and drinks, an awards ceremony, and a one-mile fun run that will precede the 5K at 8:00 AM. Parking is complimentary for race participants and volunteers.

"It's a fun course to run," said Walsingham Cross Country Coach and Colonial Road Runners member Rich Higgins. "There are some challenging hills, a nice variety of terrain. I think any runners that come out are really going to enjoy themselves.

York River State Park is known for its rare estuarine environment, where freshwater and saltwater meet to create a rich habitat for marine and plant life. Located on the York River, the park features more than 30 miles of hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails, allowing guests to explore the marsh, river shoreline, and forests. The race coincides with the park's Estuaries Day, which will feature various educational resources and demonstrations throughout the park.
