A Yorktown man man who was seriously injured in a crash Wednesday remains in the hospital, according to city police.

The 60-year-old man’s condition has improved and his vitals are stable, Hampton police said Thursday.

He was injured in a wreck in the 1200 block of Big Bethel Road near Hampton Roads Center Parkway shortly after 5:15 p.m., police said.

A gold, 2004 Chevrolet four-door sedan was traveling south on Big Bethel Road when its driver lost control, ran off the road and the car flipped over before landing back on its wheels.

The 60-year-old driver had to be cut from the Chevrolet’s wreckage.

All four lanes of Hampton Roads Center Parkway were shut down while firefighters worked to free the man.

Once he was extricated, he was taken to a local hospital to be flown to Norfolk Sentara General Hospital, police said. His injuries were serious, police said.

The lanes were reopened after about an hour. Traffic near the intersection on Hampton Roads Center Parkway was backed up roughly a mile, and some drivers were forced to use alternate routes.

The crash remains under investigation by members of the Hampton Police Division’s Accident Reconstruction Team.
