An 87-year-old woman was taken to the hospital after the car she was driving hit a train in Downtown Newport News Tuesday morning, an official said.

The accident happened about 8:30 a.m. on Warwick Boulevard near 39th Street, according to Newport News police spokeswoman Holly McPherson.

Investigators believe the woman was driving northbound on Warwick Boulevard when she crashed into the Newport News Shipbuilding engine, McPherson said. The woman disregarded the train crossing arms and signals, and the engine operator was unable to stop in time to avoid the crash. The conductor of the engine was not injured, she said.

The woman had no visible injuries, but she was taken to the hospital to be examined, McPherson said.
