Another option to get a fix of fright at Colonial Williamsburg involves paying to stay in a historical Colonial house — which may or may not actually be haunted. Although the idea has been done before, this year CW Halloween creative director Robert Currie says the overnight stays will involve new surprises.

The more than 30 Colonial houses are part of the CW's resort hotel options. Check-in is at the Williamsburg Inn.

Each Colonial house has a frightening story waiting behind the door, according to Currie.

Currie said the experience will not be more over-the-top than the "Curse of the Sea Witch" program in the Historic Area, but it will be memorable for anyone who dares to sleep over.

"Just staying in one of those houses at night is creepy in itself and dark, and has a spooky feel at night anyway," Currie said. "All we are doing with these houses are embellishing and giving that feeling of fear and that sense that somebody is in the room with you."

Each room loosely will be tied to the "Curse of the Sea Witch" theme but mainly will have a tie to the house's actual haunting story.

"I think it is a really unique thing to Colonial Williamsburg to be able to stay here on site in the Historic Area, rather than staying in a modern hotel," Currie said. "In some of these houses, the stairs are tilted, the ceilings come down, so there is the charm in staying in one of these old houses that have been around for hundreds of years."

What will happen during guests' stay in the Colonial houses remains a mystery, as no one at Colonial Williamsburg would reveal the secret surprises guest will experience during their stay.

When asked if someone will be in the room with guests, Currie replied, "There could be."

"The rooms aren't that big so you have to be brave to stay in them overnight," he said. "They all have charm, and when staying in those rooms at night, you get to hear the ghost stories, and there might even be a letter from the sea witch upon your arrival warning you."

The cost of the room starts at $216 per night for double occupancy and includes entrance into all other haunted Colonial Williamsburg events. Call 877-671-1754 to reserve a room.
