Motorists who travel along Fort Eustis Boulevard should be aware of traffic pattern changes starting Friday and continuing over the next three weeks as crews prepare to finish work replacing the bridge over the railroad tracks, a Newport News city official said.

Currently, traffic in both directions between the reservoir and the interstate — one lane for each — is traveling on the eastbound lanes as crews work on the westbound lanes and adjacent areas.

Starting Friday morning, contractors will shift traffic to the westbound lanes as they work on the eastbound lanes, said Newport News spokeswoman Kim Lee. That work is expected to take about a week, she said.

About a week later, traffic will be shifted to the outside lane of each side while crews work on the median, Lee said. That stage is expected to last about two weeks.

The roadwork is expected to wrap up by May 28, when traffic will return to two lanes in each direction, she said.

The timetable is weather-dependent, Lee said. Drivers are advised to pay close attention to signs in the area.

The work to replace the bridge has taken two years.
