JAMES CITY — Jamestown High's football team used a second-half comeback last week to knock off Tabb and get back in the playoff hunt.
Poquoson (7-3, 6-3 district) returned the favor Friday night, scoring a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to erase an 18-10 halftime deficit and win 31-24 at Wanner Stadium.
Later Friday night, the Eagles learned that the loss apparently didn't cost them a playoff berth. Unofficial calculations have them seeded 15th in the Group 4A South bracket and headed to face No. 2 Dinwiddie, one of the best teams in the Richmond area.
Poquoson easily qualified in Group 3A East and will be at home for at least one round.
Grayson Boyce was a one-man wrecking crew for the Islanders, rushing for 166 yards on 21 carries and four touchdowns. The senior standout scored on three touchdowns runs in the final 24 minutes to spoil Jamestown's homecoming festivities.
Jamestown (4-6) started quickly, scoring on each of its first two possessions, thanks to a mix of the run and pass.
Quarterback Tyler Doane hit Daivon Turner on a 31-yard completion to set up the first score. It came on Mark Lipscomb's 8-yard touchdown run on a jet sweep around left end for a 6-0 lead with 7:43 left in the first quarter.
After a strong defensive stand, the Eagles' offense went to work again. Lipscomb opened the second possession with a 29-yard run. Two plays later, he rumbled 4 yards for a score, running over a Poquoson defender to get in the end zone for a 12-0 lead.
Poquoson's offense finally broke through, finding traction with its running game. Austin Turner and Logan Schwartz combined for two big gains to set up a 26-yard field goal from Chris Coccimiglio with 12 seconds left in the first quarter.
A muffed punt gave Jamestown a first-and-10 from the Poquoson 12. The Eagles cashed in on the opportunity as Doane connected with J.J. Boyd on a 4-yard touchdown strike in the left corner of the end zone, giving the Eagles a commanding 18-3 lead with 7:21 left in the half.
Poquoson seized momentum right before halftime, driving 88 yards on just four plays. Boyce started it with a 38-yard gain, and Austin Turner followed with a run for 46 more yards to put the Islanders in scoring position. Boyce capped the drive with a 7-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 18-10 at halftime.
The second half was all Poquoson, thanks to its strong running attack. The Islanders dominated time of possession, running 41 of the 60 snaps in the final 24 minutes.
Boyce scored on the opening drive with a 2-yard run with 8:17 left. The 2-point conversion try failed, as Jamestown still led 18-16.
The Eagles' special teams gave them a spark, as Mike Mason returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown. Doane's 2-point conversion attempt came up just short as Jamestown led 24-16.
Poquoson nearly answered on the next possession, as Turner ran 35 yards for an apparent touchdown. Jamestown's Tommy Neville didn't quit on the play and knocked the ball out just before he crossed the goal line, and Lipscomb recovered for a touchback.
After a three-and-out by the Eagles' offense, Poquoson went back to work. Boyce converted on a fourth-and-2 from the Jamestown 4 to start the final quarter. He scored on the next play from scrimmage to pull the Islanders within 24-22 with 11:34 left.
On the conversion, Turner took a handoff to the right and pitched the ball back to Mitchell Petian, who scored on a reverse to tie the game at 24.
Later in the quarter, Boyce scored his fourth touchdown of the night from 1 yard to give the Islanders their first lead at 31-24 with 5:33 left.
Jamestown didn't go away quietly. Doane competed four straight passes to give the Eagles a first-and-10 from the Poquoson 20 with 2 minutes left. A costly penalty pushed them back to the Poquoson 29.
On third down, Doane rolled to his right and tried to hit Mason in the corner of the end zone, but the ball sailed just out of his reach and fell incomplete.
The Eagles went for it on fourth down, but Doane's pass was well over the head of Mason as Jamestown turned the ball over on downs.
