Vehicle fire causes major delays on westbound I-64 in James City County

Update, 5:52 p.m. — There are no more delays on Interstate 64 near the Croaker exit in James City County following an RV fire in the afternoon that caused an eight-mile backup.

Lanes were clear and moving normally as of 5:50 p.m., according to Virginia Department of Transportation.

The closure started after an RV caught fire around noon, according to the James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department’s Facebook page. The department responded with York County Fire and Life Safety to put the fire out.

No injuries were reported.

Lanes were closed until 2:45 p.m. An eight-mile backup followed.

2:45 p.m. — Lanes on westbound Interstate 64 in James City County were backed up eight miles Sunday afternoon after a vehicle fire.

The Virginia Department of Transportation reported an “incident” at 12:22 p.m. that had caused both lanes near the Croaker exit to be shut down in James City County, according to a statement from VDOT. VDOT’s 511 website, which tracks traffic, reported a vehicle fire in that location.

Both lanes had been opened as of 2:45 p.m.., but there was still an eight-mile back-up, according to an updated statement from VDOT.

There was not information immediately available about the fire.
