A 19-year-old Newport News man and a teen were arrested after police said they assaulted someone at Patrick Henry Mall Friday, and one of them displayed a handgun.

Devin Terrell Champan, of the 800 block of Chapin Wood Drive, as well as a 17-year-old Newport News boy, were charged with assault by mob and having a concealed weapon, said police department spokesman Lou Thurston.

The teen was also charged with underage possession of a firearm, Thurston said.

Police responded to the mall about 11:45 a.m. There, a witness told them one of the suspects pulled up his shirt and briefly displayed a handgun before running from the area, according to Thurston.

The two ran away but were detained by detectives as they ran out of the mall, he said. Officers found two handguns after retracing the suspects’ path through the mall.

The victim left the area before police got to the scene, Thurston said.
