Newport News and Williamsburg Amtrak riders will notice schedule changes, and may end up riding a bus, during the week of July 28.

Newport News and Williamsburg Amtrak riders will have to switch up their schedule — and perhaps be ready for a bus ride — the week of July 28.

According to Amtrak, schedules for trains 66, 67 and 94 will change to accommodate track work by CSX Railroad between Newport News and Richmond.

CSX spokeswoman Melanie Cost said the repairs should be completed by the end of the week.

"CSX is working closely with Amtrak to accommodate planned track resurfacing work between Richmond and Newport News, which involves replacing rock ballast in the track structure," she said.

Rock ballast is the material beneath tracks that helps keep rail lines in place and distributes the weight of the train.

Amtrak has posted a service change notice for the three trains on its website. Amtrak spokeswoman Kimberly Woods said Amtrak has several methods in place to alert passengers.

"We do want the public to know about this change," she said. "We are providing bus services for the affected trains."

Chris Morello, administrator of development projects for the city of Newport News, said he expects the effect on Amtrak passengers to be considerable.

"We do know that the ridership coming out of Newport News, annually, is more than 120,000 riders. So for all those business days, that'd be a lot of people that'd need to find another way."

Morello, who is leading the development of the planned multimodal station on Bland Boulevard, said he could not remember an Amtrak stoppage due to track work in several years.

In fiscal year 2013, which ended in June, 128,317 passengers used the Newport News station on Warwick Boulevard.

So far in calendar year 2014, the Newport News station has serviced 51,112 passengers, more than the combined totals for Norfolk (19,119) and Williamsburg (27,375).

While less than half the figure for the annual total in fiscal year 2013, traffic at theNewport News station picked up significantly from May (9,879) to June (10,842).
