Animal control is looking for a dog that bit someone in James City County Sunday, the Peninsula Health District said in a news release.

The dog is large with gray-and-white coloring and bit a person at the Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex on Longhill Road, the release said.

Animal control is looking for the animal to determine whether it has rabies. If they don’t find the dog, the person it bit might have to get post-exposure shots, the release said.

If found, the dog will be placed in an in-home confinement for 10 days. It won’t be taken from its owner.

The release added that residents should vaccinate pets and report any encounters with animals potentially affected by the virus. The state requires all dogs and cats start regular vaccinations between 3 and 4 months of age to prevent rabies.

Anyone who’s seen an animal that fits the description is asked to contact James City County/Williamsburg Animal Control at 757-253-1800.
