A Williamsburg man was killed in a crash Thursday that closed both I-64 westbound lanes for several hours, according to Virginia State Police.

Shortly before 5 p.m., Hans Ernest Lorenz, 75, was pronounced dead at the scene of an interstate crash near exit 243.

Police said the 2004 Toyota Camry that Lorenz was driving ran off the road. He over-corrected before running off the road for a second time, striking the guardrail and then a tree. Lorenz died upon impact, police said.

Traffic was diverted off the interstate at exit 242 and around the crash site while state police investigated the fatal wreck.

The interstate was reopened by 9 p.m., according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
