Police: Man driving wrong way on I-64 killed during fiery crash in James City County

11:02 a.m. – One person was killed Friday morning in James City County after he drove the wrong way on I-64, hit two vehicles, crashed into trees and was trapped in a fiery crash, according to Virginia State Police.

Early Friday morning, a man driving a 2011 Chevy Camaro got on I-64 in New Kent County driving east in the westbound lanes, police said.

Around 2:40 a.m., emergency dispatch received a number of calls about the driver, who sideswiped a 2016 Ford Fusion, causing the Camaro to ricochet across the lane and hit a 2016 Hino truck head-on near mile marker 229 in James City County, police said.

After the collisions, the Camaro went off the road, slammed into several trees and burst into flames, according to police reports. Its driver was unable to get out of the burning car and died at the scene, police said.

The other two drivers were treated for minor injuries by emergency medics at the crash site, police said. Police are still investigating how the driver got on I-64 going in the wrong direction, a news release states.

While a state police crash reconstruction team worked at the crash scene, I-64 westbound lanes were closed and traffic was detoured to an alternate route. The interstate re-opened about five hours after the crash, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The name of the deceased has not been released pending notification of his next of kin, police said.

7:58 a.m. – Both westbound lanes are re-open to traffic, but drivers can expect congestion in the area near Route 30 in James City County.

6:30 a.m. – Traffic on I-64 near mile marker 229 in James City County is moving slowly through an area where lanes were closed due to a fatal crash.

The crash occurred early Friday morning in the westbound lanes and involved a tractor trailer.

Drivers are advised to expect delays in the area.

5:50 a.m. – One lane of westbound I-64 in James City County has been re-opened to traffic.

5:18 a.m. – The westbound lanes of I-64 are closed near in James City County due to a fatal crash, according to Virginia State Police.

Around 2:31 a.m., emergency dispatch received calls about a vehicle driving the wrong way in the westbound lanes near mile marker 229. A short time later, police received a call about a fatal crash in the area.

Police did not release other information about the crash as of 5:37 a.m.

Troopers are currently on scene investigating and accident reconstruction has been called out to the location, Virginia State Police spokeswoman Michelle Anaya said in an e-mail.

The westbound lanes are shutdown and VDOT is rerouting traffic while the team works, Anaya said.

Drivers should expect delays in the area or used alternate routes.
