A Norfolk man died after his SUV ran off I-64 in York County and crashed, police said.

Shortly after 2:30 p.m. Friday, Timmy N. Clary, 39, was fatally injured in a crash on the interstate’s eastbound lanes near exit 243, Virginia State Police said in a news release.

The wreck occurred when Clary ran off the road, overcorrected and then lost control of the SUV. The SUV slammed into a guardrail and rolled, ejecting Clary, state police spokeswoman Michelle Anaya said.

Clary was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center, where he later died, police said.

Clary was not wearing a seat belt, police said. Anaya said speed was a factor in the fatal crash.

All travel lanes on I-64 east are open, but a roughly four-mile backup remains, VDOT states.
