The Memorial Day weekend will get off to a beautiful start Saturday, with sunshine all day long and a high temperature in the middle to upper 80s, forecasters say.

But after a comfortable overnight low of 68 degrees, we’re likely to be waking up to rain and possibly thunderstorms that will linger into Tuesday.

A tropical depression off the coast of Georgia and South Carolina is likely to become a tropical storm later today, the National Hurricane Center said this morning. A tropical storm warning was issued for parts of South Carolina.

If it becomes a tropical storm, it will pick up the name Bonnie, and it would mark the first time in decades that two tropical storms have formed in the Atlantic before the June 1 “official” start of the hurricane season.

The tropical depression/storm is expected to reach shore in South Carolina later Saturday. In southeast Virginia, it is expected to bring windy conditions and occasionally heavy rain and thunderstorms that could cause local flooding.

Depending on which forecast you look at, the chance of rain Sunday and Monday ranges from 60 percent to 90 percent.

The high temperature Sunday and Monday is expected to be in the upper 70s.
