National Weather Service warns of extreme storms Friday evening


Storms are headed throughout the Peninsula, according to the National Weather Service.

Especially strong storms will affect Gloucester, York and James City counties, Poquoson, Hampton and Newport News, according to a special weather statement. 

Brief downpours and hail are expected. Cars, trees and powerlines might sustain minor damage. 

The severe thunderstorm warning is in place until 5:15 p.m. 


There's a chance of showers and storms Friday, the National Weather Service says.

It should be mostly sunny before 2 p.m., and highs will reach 88 degrees. There's a 20 percent chance of rain after 2 p.m.

At night, thunderstorms are possible, and the chance for rain will increase to 40 percent. It should be mostly cloudy, and lows will dip to 67 degrees.
