One man is dead and another has suffered serious injuries after their car crashed in James City County near its border with New Kent County.

James City County Police said a 2000 Plymouth Neon was traveling east on Richmond Road just after 8 p.m. Friday, when the driver lost control of the car causing it to run off the road into an embankment and a tree.

The driver and passenger were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from the car, Stephen A. Rubino, James City County Police deputy chief, said in a news release.

James Terrell Cowles, 47, of James City County was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 31-year-old New Kent County man was flown to MCV Hospital with serious injuries.

Police are investigating to determine the driver of the car and the cause of the crash, the news release said.

Rubino said the car was speeding at the time of the crash.
