Speed was a factor in a crash on I-64 in York County that killed a 17-year-old boy, an official said.

The accident happened about 1:40 p.m. Friday near the Camp Perry exit ramp, Sgt. Michelle Anaya said in a news release.

Carlos A. Tobar, 17, of Williamsburg was traveling westbound in a 1998 Honda at a high rate of speed. He lost control when he attempted to exit, ran off the road and struck several trees, Anaya said.

Tobar suffered major injuries in the crash and was initially taken to Williamsburg Sentara Hospital. He was later transferred to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News where he died, Anaya said.

Police have not yet determined if Tobar was wearing his seat belt, Anaya said.
