New Kent High School sophomore Jacob Vick, a 15-year-old starting linebacker on the Trojans' football team, died Tuesday evening.
New Kent football coach Dan Rounds said Vick collapsed during practice. Vick was transported from practice by helicopter to a hospital in Richmond, where Rounds said Vick died.
Rounds said he is not sure of the cause of death or what caused Vick to collapse in practice. Rounds said the team had finished individual drills and was doing "team work" when Vick fell to the ground.
Rounds said Vick recently sat out a game after sustaining a concussion, but received medical clearance to play in this last Friday's home game against Lafayette. Rounds said that after consulting with Vick's parents, he did not play Vick in the game against Lafayette.
"He wasn't just a good player, he was a great kid," Rounds said. "He did everything the right way.
"He did all of the things you'd hope your son or daughter would do. This is the worst-case scenario in the back of everyone's heads, but one you never expect to happen. It's definitely a shock."
