One person was flown to Sentara Norfolk General on Thursday after a man was injured in a York County crash.

Around 4:15 p.m., a car and an SUV collided at the intersection of Falcon and Cook roads. When emergency responders arrived, they found one driver trapped in a car that had ended up under the SUV, York County Fire and Life Safety assistant chief Jeffery Payne said.

“First, we had to stabilize the vehicle on top to get the driver out of the vehicle under it,” he said.

After making sure the SUV would not topple down on them, firefighters worked to free the man from the car. After several minutes, he was put on a stretcher.

On a field in front of York High School, a medical helicopter called Nightingale waited for the patient, so he could be flown to Norfolk General.

The other driver was injured, but information on their injuries was not available Thursday evening.

Virginia State Police are investigating the crash, Payne said.
