UPDATE: York County lost 911 services during a technology upgrade, according to Terry Hall, the county’s director of communications.

“We were upgrading some of our technology and the 911 system failed for about 19 minutes,” Hall said. The failure specifically affected the voice portion of the 911 system, as well as the county’s administrative phone lines, but didn’t affect the center’s ability to receive emergency text messages.

People who called the center during the outage couldn’t reach an operator, but the calls registered on the county’s system as “missed,” Hall said. The dispatch operators then called those numbers.

Nine people called during the outage and dispatch operators managed to call every one of them back, he said.

Hall said another outage is highly unlikely, but was hesitant to say another outage would never happen.

“I’ve been there for 25 years and this is the first time there’s been an outage,” Hall said.

UPDATE: The county’s 911 system is back online after a technical failure, according to Gail Whittaker, the county’s public information coordinator. Residents should resume calling 911 in case of an emergency.

ORIGINAL STORY: York County’s 911 system is currently down, and county authorities don’t know why.

People in need of assistance should call 890-3630 or 890-3600 instead, said Gail Whittaker, the county’s public information coordinator. Whittaker sent out notification around 2:25 p.m. and said there’s no known reason for the system to be down.

Whittaker said the county will send out notification as soon as the system is back online.
