York-Poquoson Sheriff J.D. Diggs was awarded by the Virginia Drug Abuse Resistance Education Association last week in Hampton.

Diggs received the Gary B. Payne D.A.R.E. Administrator of the Year for Virginia award for his support of the program and the D.A.R.E. officer, Sgt. Mark Medford, according to a news release.

D.A.R.E. is a program that assists students in acknowledging and resisting pressures that would influence them to use drugs.

Uniformed officers act as instructors in the 10-week program, according to the D.A.R.E. website.

Culpeper Sheriff Scott H. Jenkins also received the award.
