Virginia Gazette Last Word for Aug. 1: sidewalks, kayaks and gratitude

The Virginia Gazette

Recently, while walking to church along the sidewalk on Richmond Road, my wife and I have encountered, on two separate occasions, a cyclist and skateboarder for which we had to step aside or be run over. While it is hard to legislate against such boorish and disrespectful behavior, shouldn't there be some type of ordinance to ensure the safety of pedestrians on public sidewalks?

How can the students and faculty be proud of their school? Please cut the grass in front of Lafayette High School. Overgrown weeds in front of school makes the school look shoddy and unkempt. Is that the image to represent Lafayette High School? Worse comes to worse, grass/weed control could be used as a lesson/ punishment for students who have disciplinary problems, let them do the cutting.

What a wonderful community resource Williamsburg Botanical Garden in Freedom Park is. If you haven't been there, you need go. Not only is the garden a beautiful place to visit, there are educational programs for adults and children each month and this year they have started having free concerts in the garden on Friday evenings. I think the next one is Aug. 7. And this weekend, Aug 1-2, there is a Butterfly Festival taking place in the garden with a tent with over 200

Many, many thanks to Waypoint Seafood Grill for the excellent service for a recent private dinner party. No server could have been better than Tess, nor better planner to work with than Tina. We are grateful for the overall ambience, food and courtesies. Huzzah to local business.

Thank you to our James City County Firemen for hosting a delightful open house at their brand new Fire Station 4 on Olde Towne Road last Saturday. There were great displays, demonstrations, handouts and refreshments. The children were given plastic red fire chief hats and were allowed to climb into the fire engines on display. As a retired couple, we were just sorry that we had no children to bring to this festive event. Everyone had a great time.

The StageLights production of "The Wizard of Oz" was the highlight of our summer. Congratulations to the directors, producers and young people who made that happen.

A grateful thank you to Dr. Chris DeWill and Dr. Teresa DeWitt, a husband-and-wife veterinarian team, for helping my little collie dog recently. I appreciated their kindness, care and professionalism. You can reach them at Williamsburg Veterinary Clinic, located in Colony Square Shopping Center, 253-7387.
