Last Word for Alexa Halko, Sept. 24

Well done, Alexa!

Congratulations to Alexa Halko, an outstanding Jamestown High junior who earned three medals in the Paralympics in Rio! Having a cousin with cerebral palsy, I know a bit about the hard work involved in overcoming the effects of cerebral palsy. Our thoughts and prayers have been with you, and will continue to be.

National anthem

The 49ers quarterback has every right to protest what he thinks are injustices. However, he does not, in my opinion, need to disrespect our National Anthem, which has nothing to do with his feelings. Showing respect to the symbol of this country that has certainly been good to him. Shame on you!

Staggered terms

I was unsure as what to think concerning the staggered elections for the James City County Board of Supervisors but then when I saw who was against the measure, I became convinced that the Board did the right thing by approving the staggered election cycle!

School start times

I am a high school student and I would like to share my opinion on our start times. I feel that our school starts too early in the day and so do many of my peers. Research has been done to show that teenage brains are not fully functional until 10 a.m. in the morning so getting to school at 7 a.m. is insane. I feel that we should get to sleep a little later and the county would see a rise in grades. Thank you.

Recommended

For the people looking for someone to seed and aerate their lawn as well as dig flower beds: I would recommend DG&A Lawn Care at 904-228-4110. It's a young couple, and they do everything for lawn care as well as small jobs around the house. They're very good at what they do and they're very reputable. Thank you.

Last month two workers from Mr. Rogers Windows came to our home to replace two sliding glass doors on our back porch that had begun to leak during our frequent rainstorms. They began to work several hard hours replacing wood, pulling out broken screws and cleaning up their work. My wife and I were so impressed by them that we took a picture of them at work. It is increasingly rare to see people really take pride in their work and doing the best job they can.

Our organization has quarterly socials and has done them for several years. We had our social last week at the Fat Tuna Grille and Oyster House. The food was not only plentiful; it was spectacular. The staff was friendly and very accommodating and the atmosphere was "FUN." The most expressed opinion: "Best Ever!" I would recommend Chef Ken and the Fat Tuna for a great event!

I thoroughly enjoyed the special wine dinner hosted by Giuseppe's Italian Restaurant on Olde Towne Road last Sunday. It was my first time eating there and I will definitely return! The exceptional pairing of Italian wines with the superbly prepared dishes was "poetry." The staff and owner were very attentive and ensured our evening was top notch! A special nod goes to Susan, who served our table with professionalism and poise.

We just had our duct work cleaned immaculately by a company called Sanair Quality Duct Cleaning. They were incredibly professional, neat and fastidious in their efforts. They can be reached at 757-873-2091 or on their website: www.sanairclean.com. This should be as much a part of household maintenance as is cleaning the chimneys of our fireplaces.

What things cost

Williamsburg has gotten a reputation as being a chi-chi little town. That partly has to do with expecting services to be priced the same as the higher priced places from which you have come. In general, we do not pay $40.00 an hour for a housekeeper, no matter how good they are. Divide the job per hours.

Full funding

It is projected that Social Security will run out of funds in the near future with no answer at the present. We all know it is funded by working people. Do you ever hear that food stamps is going to run out of funds? It is also funded by the same working people! Makes you think.

IRS scams

There are another two IRS scams going on at this time. The numbers are 713-609-1134 and 814-795-0423—claiming that IRS has a lawsuit against us. How can we stop these calls? We are seniors and they've been calling twice a day. Is there someone we can call to stop them? Thank you.

Fraudulent calls claiming to be from IRS continue, multiple calls per day. One of several identified himself (despite foreign accent) as IRS Investigator, Henry Spencer, 1111 Constitution Ave NW, Washington, DC, 206-375-9427. No doubt a false identity and address but can law enforcement trace these calls to eventually stop this fraud?

Happy dance

Broadway Dance Arts is an amazing dance studio! My daughter has been dancing there for years and loves it. Great teachers, great technique, age appropriate choreography and a warm nurturing environment! Each dancer is treated with kindness, compassion, and professionalism. If you are looking for a dance studio in Williamsburg, you must check out Broadway Dance Arts!

Group home

Tommy Norment's mean-spirited paranoia is unjustified. We have been living next door to a recovery house for several years. At first, we were worried, too, but have found over time that they are great neighbors. Responsible, friendly and pretty low-key. It's nice to know that these facilities are performing such an important service to the community as a whole.

Would Senator Norment be just as outraged if a group home of this type were proposed in my neighborhood, which is located right next to Norge Elementary School? You are either for the concept or against it, regardless of the income level of residents or whether it is a public or private school.

We all know that mental health is an important societal problem, but so is the safety and well-being of our children. For the state to condone locating a group home within easy walking distance of a school is totally inappropriate. If there are no state policies or regulations concerning siting of these facilities, there should be. What we need is a law that provides for a buffer zone around our schools!

The group home in our Williamsburg city neighborhood moved in with a total lack of transparency. Many community fears could have been allayed if we were provided some basic information such as how many people would be living in the house, a very general idea about the residents and staffing patterns. We were told nothing and were not given an opportunity to welcome our new neighbors because of the secrecy.

Teacher pay

Let's get real about teacher pay. We turn our children's future and, by extension, our nation's future, ten months a year for twelve years to teachers. In addition to a "traditional educational program," because we, as parents have abdicated our responsibility, teachers must also instill, in our children, a sense of discipline, courtesy and respect ( for themselves and others). Logic dictates that we need the best teachers possible. To get the best, we must pay better than the rest.

I find it amusing that people who are clearly ignorant of facts want to defend low teacher pay. There is no option of 10 or 12 month payout in WJCC. We are also contracted for more than 200 days and put in much more than nine hours a day on average. I would also like to know what salary the "$25 an hour" figure is based on. This person should be thankful we choose to teach despite the continued lack of appreciation we receive.

Those who have a big problem concerning teachers should know that teachers' time after school is spent a great deal grading papers, making lesson plans and writing letters of recommendation for former students. Second, many teachers have a second job in the summer to make ends meet. I would like to end this with "if you have been in front of a classroom for nine months and worked and walked in a teacher's shoes—then I'll respect your opinion."

Prayer in school

Children are allowed to pray and carry Bibles in school. Per the Virginia Board of Education's Guidelines for Religious Activities In the Public Schools: "During such free time, students should be free to read religious literature of their own choosing, and to discuss religious themes with other willing students on the same basis as they might discuss secular interests and subjects." Likewise religious expression is permitted in prisons, including (but not limited to) prayer and reading the Bible.

Respect for pets

This is for whoever disposed of the body of a small brown dog behind the sewer cleanout at the intersection of Route 199 and Penniman Road last week. Please have the kindness to give a burial or cremation.

Many thanks

Thank you very much to the person who found my dog leash—double dog leash—at Waller Mill Park on Saturday.

Public golf courses

In view of the present owner(s)' recent decisions concerning the Williamsburg National courses, it would seem logical for James City County to give serious consideration to taking the complex over and operate it much as Hampton and Newport News do, very successfully, nearby. After all, we have paths for bikers, camp grounds for campers and other enterprises for residents and tourists. Why not two well run, not-for -profit golf courses ?

Preferred admission

Are you kidding me? "On Sept 1 Georgetown University announced it would begin offering preferred admission status to descendants of former slaves." Watching the news and recent sporting events, I would have thought we are an oppressive, racist society and you know what, we are! Virtually everything is slanted in today's society towards race. I was always taught that two wrongs don't make a right! Guess that depends on which "PC" camp you are in.

Hinckley's debt

Hinckley did not pay any debt to society. He was found not guilty by way of insanity. Actually, we owed him a debt. He was confined to a hospital because he was found to be insane, not a killer. Insane people are not allowed to walk the street. They are put in a hospital where they can receive mental health treatment to work through their mental illnesses, then to be released into society once, if ever, they no longer show they have mental illnesses that put them in the institution in the first place.

Police shootings

I don't believe that the black community will ever accept the shooting of a black person by police, even when it's proven to be fully justified. The latest rioting in North Carolina is just another example why martial law must be invoked immediately to avoid violence due to rioting. Under martial law, there would be curfews, arrests and the right for the police and/or national guard to shoot to protect themselves.

Looking for ...

Has anyone had replacement windows installed from the outside of the house? I would appreciate the name and telephone number of the installer/company. Please reply to the last word. Thank you.

Is there a professional in our area who evaluates whether or not an attic TV antenna would be effective in a home? And if it is determined to be effective and practical, is there a professional installer? I have replaced cable TV with a good indoor antenna but reception is limited to two or three channels. The covenants where I live prohibit any external satellite dish.

Is there anyone in the Williamsburg area who can convert an old railroad lantern into a hanging light fixture? 220-1369.

I am in search of a professional gas fireplace craftsman to do routine tune-up for residential installation; previous craftsman no longer available. Anyone having knowledge of one, please post his/her name, phone number and/or email address.

Looking for pots for indoor plants ten inches or larger in diameter. Please email availability to: cambria121@cox.net. Thanks.

I would like to know whether Fantastic Sam's salon at Williamsburg Crossing will be relocated or be reopened and also where Richard will be. Thank you.

I'm trying to figure out where this ice cream joint was that the man apologized for being in the hospital. I'd like to give him a call and see if I can't help him out somehow. Thank you so much. My name is Desanto. My number is 757-258-3430.

There was a recommendation for a person who could fix siding. I cut it out and lost it. I would appreciate it if somebody could help me again and tell me the person who could fix siding. Thank you.

I have recently lost a small change purse with much needed keys inside. Please email rubrown@cox.net if found. Thank you.

To pet owners: A medium-to-large breed dog owner who is having health issues or is possibly in the military or for whatever reason and needs to find a new home for a dog or dogs (and would like not to separate them) may call 757-784-1621.

For the person looking for someone to aerate and reseed their lawn: Call Joseph McClallen at Just Lawns, 757-869-7963. He does excellent work and his prices are very reasonable. Word about him has spread in the neighborhood and now several of us use his services.

Our miniature dachshund, Penny, ran off in the rain Tuesday evening. She is white with brown markings, about 8 pounds. She was last seen in Powhatan Secondary. She is skittish and will probably not come when called. If seen, please call 253-6540.

Power failures

What's the problem with Dominion Power and their inability to prevent extended power outages on the Jamestown grid here in the city? It seems like almost monthly we have 4-8 hour power failure.

Gas prices

Jeers to the gas station in Toano that went to $2.20 Monday morning. The funny part is that an hour later they dropped to $2.10 to match the others up the road.

Quiet space

I recently made a trip to the JCC library. I was astonished at the small children screaming and running around inside the library. Parents, teach your children, no matter what their age, to respect the rules of an establishment. If they are not taught important things at an early age, you will have rebellious children and wonder why you have no control. You might think your child is cute and that it's all right for children to behave like this, but believe me, other people don't.

Cat problems

To the people that are upset about letting your cats outside: We have owned many cats over the years and have come to the conclusion that a cat is better off staying in the house. He leads a happier life, gets into less trouble, is cleaner and has less chance of getting killed by a car. Plus there are less vet bills. Annoying the neighbors is over.

Prison work

If you are liberal, here is one you can really get excited about. The Wall Street Journal reported on Sept. 15 that prison inmates in several states have engaged in protests with many refusing to work due to low pay and inadequate health care. It is high time that we release all prisoners, restore their voting rights and pay them a livable wage if they promise to be good boys and girls.

Presidential politics

Where can you find a Donald Trump sign? Does the yard sign cost? Please respond back in the Last Word. Where can you find a Donald Trump yard sign? Thank you.

It is a scary election time when the idea that makes Hillary look good is Trump.

Unfortunately Donald Trump will not let himself come in second in any endeavor. With this in mind, I fear for the American people, if he becomes President. He will try to outdo Ronald Reagan's raising the national debt by almost 500 percent by raising it maybe 600 or 700 percent to somewhere around 200 trillion dollars.

All one has to do is check the facts. They show that all cities with the highest crime rates are governed by Democrats. The significant increase in terrorism in our country was realized under a Democratic president. So, what do we have to lose in putting in Republicans to run our governments, federal, state and local?
