Last Word, Sept. 30: Guns, Trump and traffic

The Virginia Gazette

More on guns - I have two comments about all the go-around about firearms in the Last Word. One, I only enter any business displaying a "no guns or firearms" signs long enough to tell the owner or manager that I will not shop here as long as that sign and policy is in place. Second, the caller on Sept. 19th needs to go back and check the Australian, Great Britain and Canadian statistics again. I think you will find gun crimes in all three went up after the ban.

About Trump

To the caller who described Barack Obama as "maniacal and pompous": Say it isn't so. How would you describe Donald Trump? I'd like to know. I've always heard that "money is the root of all evil." Hats off to Donald Trump. You fit that perfectly.

Tough Congress

Our President has had to bypass the obstructionist Congress as much as he has to get anything done for the good of the country. The poor citizens of our country needed the Affordable Care Act and to spend more than 50 failing tries to undo it, even against the ruling of the Supreme Court, was a horrible waste of time, better spent on accomplishing something worthwhile. Maybe Congress could follow Trump's recommendation and increase the taxes on the wealthy and corporations.

Syria strategy

A general was just grilled by Congress -- they were asked why our money spent in Syria isn't working. ISIS has doubled. We don't want to back Assad, which doesn't make sense because he's the leader of the country. We have decided to back rebels. So here's what we've done. We've spent 41 million dollars to train rebels. Initially, that was for 41 rebels—that was 1 million dollars a rebel. We have 21 rebels of which are completely ineffective. Wouldn't it be nice if we spent a million dollars for every US Army, US Marine, US Air Force, Navy Seal, US Navy? This is why President Obama will be meeting with Putin. We don't love Putin; we don't even like Putin. But Putin is at least backing Syria's government. Strategy makes no sense.

Socialist America?

Bernie Sanders, who's an avowed socialist, would like to see the new head of the Labour Party, Tom Watson in England be the new prime minister. So, if Bernie Sanders has his way, would we change the name of the United States, make it like Germany did, the Socialist Party when Hitler was in World War II. So, should we change the name of the United States to the United Socialist States of America? Is that what we want?

Trump on veterans

I've been waiting for somebody to address the deplorable treatment of our veterans. Finally Trump came out and said they're treated like third-class citizens. They are. The Veterans Administration is a nightmare under this president. The hospitals are a nightmare under this president. Do you know where some of the worse hospitals are for veterans? Right here in Virginia.

Old-time pope

The Pope reminds me of popes of the 1500s and 1600s and 1400s that inserted themselves into government and told governments what they needed to do. Here's my question. When the Lord set up His church, he's always had prophets and then he had 12 apostles and then he had his missionaries in the 70s. Those who I find now are in the Mormon Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Fundraiser

I think it's absolutely disgusting that Toano Middle School is doing this fall fundraiser where the kids have to sell five items to be able to see a dunk show. So, if they don't sell anything, they don't get to see it. It's just disgusting that they're bribing these kids to sell stuff in order to be able to see a show and it is so wrong. I would love to talk to somebody about it. Thank you.

The bicycles

How much longer are we going to have to look at these disgusting — they're supposed to be bicycle sculptures, I guess — but they're hideous and they just make the whole town look bad. There are three in front of the library, for heaven's sake. How much longer are we going to have to put up with them? Thank you.

Traffic question

Opinions in this community range far and wide. I'm curious. Does a STOP sign mean a full and complete stop or is it OK to just slow down and look both ways before moving on? Reply to the Last Word with your thoughts.

Yes, I was just wondering if anyone else has complained about the height of the railroad crossing right there at Airport Road and Richmond Road, by the Family Inn? It seems really high to cross over and it seems that there's more damage to your vehicle to get across. I just wanted to know if anyone else, you know, felt the same way. Thank you.

CSX needs to be told to fix the mess they created at Airport Road grade crossing.

Clinic rules

I read recently that the board rolls back abortion clinic rules. Please post in your newspaper for all the people that are fighting for pro life to call their state representatives and tell them that they do not want the abortion clinic rules rolled back. Please don't do that. Please don't have the abortion clinic rules rolled back. We're trying to eliminate abortion in our society and if we roll them back, that's just going to cause more abortions. Thank you.

School wealth

Wow, our school system had a sizable budget surplus. That's great. I guess we need more new buses and textbooks, but could we share the wealth? How about spending a little on refurbishing some of our aging playgrounds? Our youngest students are part of this school system too and they don't use textbooks

Stryker design

Whoever approved the design for the new Stryker building must have had bad dreams the night before approval. Architecturally it is truly unique to Williamsburg. It stands out as a contemporary monstrosity unlike any other facility. Why?

Refugees / immigrants

I understand that the State Department is going to allow several thousand more immigrants from Syria. Many of these are young men, and that is one way the ISIS can infiltrate our country and set up different places to watch us bomb bases or whatever. Why don't we help the people—they don't want to come here or even to Europe. They want to stay in their homeland, and we need to help them to get in their homeland and we need to destroy these terrorists that are killing people in Syria and Iraq and other Middle East countries. We've taken in 11 million people from Mexico and South America. We can't afford, as taxpayers, to keep bringing them in. How are they going to get a job when they don't speak our language, they don't know our law?

The State Department has said it's not a matter of if ISIS will infiltrate the refugees camp but that they will. I have another thought. What questions are we going to ask those who are coming in from the refugee camps to the United States? What are we going to say? "Are you a terrorist?" If they say, "No," then do we let them in?

Looking for ...

Is there a doctor in the surrounding Williamsburg/Newport News area that specializes and is a perfect specialist at caring for, handling and relieving the pain of peripheral neuropathy? I've been in pain for 3 1/2 years now. I have been to multiple doctors and I have yet to find one, and I have taken multiple medications and I have yet to find one that will help me have one night of sleep or relief of pain. Can someone notify me at 912-3729?

During an emergency flood clean-out, some things sitting out on a card table or by wall may have been misunderstood as trash. They belong to a child who is looking for one small light (top not on it), one saucer and one mug. If you have these, please return them to the office for us or email circuslike2@gmail.com Thanks.

Does anybody have a single twin bed to donate? If you do, can you give me a call at 206-0634. Thank you.

I'm seeking to engage the services of someone who could arrange to have several parcels currently in storage in Williamsburg sent to me via UPS, FedEx or USPS. At my expense, of course. Please call me at (608) 250-8131. Thank you. Williamsburg resident until 7/1/15.

Missing: Baume and Mercier bracelet watch from Sept. 21st. Reward offered. Please call 876-1870. Thank you.

The Constitution

What Ben Carson was asked was, basically whether Sharia law was consistent with the Constitution. Well, of course it's not. Under Sharia law, women can't drive. Under Sharia law, women can be stoned to death. I don't know why everybody's upset. Under Sharia law, it's death to infidels. I don't know how that's consistent with the Constitution.

On the president

John McCain, in running for president in 2007, said the exact same thing that Ben Carson did, you know, that he liked Islamics but that we have a Christian president. Their laws are not consistent. Said the same thing as Ben Carson. He wasn't attacked. So what changed? Is it perhaps choosing the White House? Why is the media attacking Ben Carson? They didn't attack John McCain.

Yes. Tom Power Jr. at the Fat Canary out did themselves again last night with a tremendous service by the crew and the meals were simply outstanding, including desserts. Oh, to be sure, the Fat Canary is it. Thank you.

I just want to say "Thank You" and "Job Well Done" to Adam and his team for putting on The Great Williamsburg Adventure Race. It was a fun, family-friendly event and we had a fantastic time! What a way to promote the community! We're already looking forward to doing it again next year. Allons-y!

I would also like to tell you about our confidence and appreciation of Dr. Sparkman and his staff at Noah's Ark Veterinary Hospital on Richmond Road. Dr. Sparkman has taken exceptional care of our animals, and his way of thoroughly explaining medical terminology in an understandable way, giving all options to us, has been wonderful and greatly appreciated. We really have a feeling of confidence that are animals are in wonderful care there. I just can't say enough about how pleased we are with the care our animals receive at Noah's Ark, and also the competence of the staff, their friendliness. And they really take their time with us. We're never hurried or rushed. Thank you very much.

DOG street

Around town, I've seen the Colonial Williamsburg buses that the new dog mascot of the Historic Area [is] printed on the side of the buses. I was just wondering if anyone had told the president of Colonial Williamsburg, Mitchell Reiss, that DOG Street stands for Duke of Gloucester Street and not a furry animal.

RoboCarmen

I too have an ongoing relationship with RoboCarmen. She called this morning from 1-269-224-9029 in Battle Creek, MI. She calls faithfully several times a week to patiently explain how I have been chosen for an exciting prize or event. Carmen is a robo scam and we always quickly hang up. Her calls should not be responded to in any way on the phone. Don't hit one or anything else, just hang up. Although Carmen can call from other numbers, we contacted our residential phone provider, Cox Communications, and had her blocked on the number she used today. We also had our general blocking function activated and can now add other numbers to be blocked.

Said with a smile

The more I read the Last Word, the more I realize that Virginia may be for lovers, but Williamsburg is certainly whine country!

No phone, please

Customers in cash register lines: Please remember that the cashier is trying to ask you questions while you are talking on the phone. I believe that when you are cashing out that you should not be on the phone. It slows down the cashing out process, and the people waiting behind you want to get checked out quickly.

A rumor

Why on earth would Jim Kennedy start a rumor about the county delaying the issuance of real estate tax bills? He had to know such a move would enrage citizens already fuming over his vote for the largest tax hike in County history. Jim Kennedy is unfit for office and it is time for him to go.

Thank you

I'd like to give a special thank you to Dr. Elizabeth Buetow and Nurse Tom. As a doctor, she seemed to really listen to my problems with my kidneys. My wife and I agreed that she really listened and answered all my questions. We were really impressed. Nurse Tom was also very responsive to my problems. Sentara Hospital ER is the greatest.
