Virginia Gazette Last Word for Aug. 27: Dangerous intersection; Cheaper gas; Truism

Dangerous intersection

"The traffic light at the intersection of Monticello Avenue and Courthouse Commons shopping center has been malfunctioning for months. Cars waiting to turn left onto Monticello, or go straight across into Courthouse Commons from the Trader Joe's side wait several cycles before finally getting a green light. This results in drivers losing patience and going forward on a red light as soon as they see a break in the traffic on Monticello. It's understandable, but not safe when cars are moving 40-45 mph along Monticello."

Stryker Building

"The new building that will replace the Stryker building… I love that it will not block out the skyline, but isn't the style completely different from the buildings' around it? It looks futuristic! I like and respect the architect, but let's be sure the design says 'Williamsburg.' Hopefully the Gazette can publish an updated detailed image of the plan so all can see and feel confident before the footings are poured."

Bicycles

"To the person critical of cyclists riding on Route 5: The bike trail is still under construction. As to the millions of dollars (debatable) invested in the bike trail I would point out that 'you' also invested billions of dollars (non-debatable) training and outfitting the Iraqi army. Given the two choices, which do you think will turn out to be the better investment?"

Truism

"The National Institute of Health has just released the results of a $20 million research study completed under a grant to Johns Hopkins. The study found that women who carry a little extra weight live longer than the men who mention it."

Redskins nickname

"What's the mascot and logo of Red Mesa High School on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona? Redskins!"

Williamsburg charm

"I work for Colonial Williamsburg, so won't comment about that part of a previous writer's comment. However, Richmond Road is my 'backyard.' I like having the option of Applebee's and Chipotle. I think we'd see a lot more comments in The Last Word if we didn't have chain restaurants."

Highway medians

"Kudos to VDOT for mowing the grass in the medians and on the shoulders on routes 60, 199, and 30 at generally the same time. York County on Route 199 is a little behind and its looks scraggily, but what an improvement. Hope all agree, it looks good. Now if we can get the signage that the mowers knocked down put back up it would bring it all together."

Middle school sports

"I am concerned about the fairness of tryouts for team sports in our schools. It seems that many school team rosters match local travel team rosters. Coaches, please be aware that not all parents can afford travel team costs that exceed $1,000 a season. Don't lock other kids out from participating. Remember, the travel team kids already play multiple times a week. Give other students without financial resources a chance to play as well."

Winter break

"I have a question about the WJC Schools 2014-15 calendar. The December calendar says Winter Break is from Dec. 22 to Jan. 2. The January calendar says there is no school on Jan 1. It doesn't say there is no school on Jan. 2 nor does it say that school starts Jan. 2 or Jan 5, the following Monday. When do students go back to school after Winter Break?"

Classes resume on Monday, Jan. 5, 2015.
