This story has been corrected to say the University of Virginia finished tied for second among public universities in the most recent U.S. News and & World Report rankings. A previous version said the university finished third.

In the most recent U.S. News & World Report, the College of William and Mary ranked sixth among public universities in the country.

It's a familiar place for W&M, the university was also ranked sixth last year.

When public and private schools nationwide are considered, the college finished 32nd this year, up from 34th last year.

"When it comes to U.S. News, we always expect some movement each year -- up or down. You'll see we improved this year in the overall national rankings," said chief communications officer Brian Whitson.

In Virginia, only the the University of Virginia bested William and Mary. They tied for second with the University of California-Los Angeles among all public universities nationwide. Virginia Tech finished 26th.

U.Va and Tech were 24th and 74th, respectively, once respondents considered both public and private schools.

Counselors' collective perception of W&M's undergraduate teaching program slipped just a tad. Measured by the frequency with which other college presidents mentioned them, William and Mary finished 12th best in the country this year, but was fourth best last year.

"These days, there are many different rankings and many different lists and the good news is that William and Mary consistently fares well in nearly all of them — whether it's a listing based on the excellence of education or quality of professors, a commitment to service, preparing students for the future, campus beauty or value," Whitson said.

Among schools noted for providing services to veterans, W&M ranked 19th in the country this year, an improvement from 28th last year.

The U.S. News & World Report also measures a school's reputation among high school counselors in the same way it does with college presidents. This year, W&M ranked 36th, a drop from their rank of 27th best last year.

"While any one list doesn't capture a complete picture of the educational experience at William and Mary, we do know that people care about rankings and it is satisfying to be included among the best," Whitson said.
