Twelve people, including 10 children, have been rushed to Rockford-area hospitals after a crash involving a school bus and a car, according to fire and sheriff’s officials.

A school bus carrying 32 Belvidere District 100 children turned on its side after the collision with a car around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Orth and Beloit roads near Belvidere, according to the North Boone Fire District and the Boone County Sheriff’s Office.

The car, travelling west on Orth, failed to yield and struck the bus, sheriff’s officials said in a news release. The bus continued north, tipping on its side.

More than a dozen ambulances from multiple jurisdictions, including Rock Co., Wis., took those injured in the crash to four nearby hospitals, Chief Brad Bartell said.

Though one girl who was pinned underneath the bus had to be extricated by firefighters, Bartell said none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening. Most students were treated at the scene and released to their parents, sheriff’s officials said.
