In addition to bringing back postseason events to North Carolina, the NCAA on Tuesday announced Chicago will be a future site for the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments.

The NCAA revealed host sites for the men’s tournament through 2022 and for the women’s tournament through 2020. The United Center will host men’s regional games in 2022 with Northwestern as the host school, and Wintrust Arena will host women’s regional games in 2019 with DePaul as the host.

Wintrust Arena, DePaul’s new home facility for men’s and women’s basketball, is scheduled to open in the fall near McCormick Place.

The United Center hosted the men’s Midwest Region in 2016.

The NCAA had pulled championships from North Carolina in the wake of the controversial “bathroom bill” known as HB2 that critics said discriminated against transgender people. The NCAA softened its stance after legislature passed this month that replaced the bill, which restricted anti-discrimination protections for LGBT people and required people to use bathrooms that corresponded to the gender on their birth certificates.

Critics say the new legislature still allows for discrimination against LGBT people.

First- and second-round men’s basketball games will be played in Greensboro in 2020 and in Raleigh in 2021, and Greensboro also will host women’s basketball regional games in 2019. Cary, N.C., will host soccer’s College Cup for women in 2018 and 2020 and for men in 2019 and 2021.

Charlotte previously had been scheduled to host first- and second-round men’s basketball games in 2018.
