Human remains found in Hayes section of Gloucester

Human remains were discovered in a wooded area in Gloucester Saturday morning, according to a release from the Gloucester Sheriff's Office.

Two people stumbled across a skull about a mile into the woods on the 3000 block of George Washington Memorial Highway in the Hayes area of Gloucester on Saturday morning.

The Gloucester County Sheriff's Office responded to a call from the pair around 11 a.m. and searched the area, where they found additional bones and clothing near where the skull was discovered.

The Virginia State Police Forensic Unit is helping the Sheriff's Office process the scene. Once that's done, the medical examiner will attempt to identify the remains and determine the cause of death and the identity.

The Sheriff's Office said the only missing person report on file is a 30-year-old man named Michael "Craig" Conway of Hayes. He was reported missing in January 2011. The office hasn't been able to determine whether or not Conway's case is related to the remains.
