"There were more parents at the School Board meeting against the board's decision to limit recess to 15 minutes a day than the three who spoke. Unfortunately, many of these parents did not know you had to fill out a card with your name and e-mail, and submit it before the meeting in order to speak during the Public Comment Session. Hopefully, these parents and others will return to the next board meeting and have an opportunity to fill out their cards and speak."
"I don't understand why the school system needs $16 million, the design costs for a new middle school. Dust off the plans for the one we built three or four years ago and simply pay the architect another commission. You don't need to reinvent the wheel."
"The WJC School Booard approved Abram Frink Jr. Community Center at James River as an emergency shelter? And they are going to put a generator there? They couldn't find someplace that's more than a few thousand feet from the James River and not that far from smaller tributaries? I think it's quite shortsighted to put a emergency shelter in an area that may just be underwater in the worst storms."
James City County established the building as an emergency shelter.
"We were just thinking how grateful we are for the deer that come into our yard. There's a mother and four smaller deer. And we're grateful for the bluebirds and blue jays andcardinals and rabbits that come in. Why have a yard if you can't fill it with these beautiful birds and animals? You could have it the way we had it in Scotsdale, where everything is walled in and there's nothing coming into your yard except scorpions and occasionally a snake. But it certainly isn't as lovely as what's here."
In the news
"In the Feb. 19 Last Word, someone complained about the Unitarian Universalist Church being on the front page of the Gazette. The press came out to interview them because the UUs were outside of the courthouse supporting the ruling on the ban on same-sex marriages. None of the churches you mentioned were out there that day. That's why the Gazette didn't come to your church."
"As a long-time resident of Kingsmill, I am delighted to read that the cell tower project will move forward. The cell phone reception in Kingsmill has always been inadequate. Bring on the cell towers."
"Steve Vaughan's column, where he endorses Rob Wittman's idea to allow health insurance companies to compete across state lines, is a reckless idea. What would happen is all the insurance companies would move to North Dakota where there are no regulations, and you would find very poor policies at a very high price, just like the 29.99 percent interest they charge on credit cards now."
"It should be pointed out that the item in the Saturday, Feb 8, Last Word commenting on 'Colonial Heritage Day Care for Seniors' is incorrect. Colonial Heritage Foundation is the organization that provides day care."
"During the weekend of Feb. 14-16, William & Mary played a series of three baseball games against the U.S. Military Academy. I find it curious that your paper did not consider that important enough to even mention, much less list the scores of the three games."
"I was wondering if any kind of tribute to Shirley Temple Black would be posted in the Gazette, considering the fact that she visited Colonial Williamsburg a few times as a child star and as an adult diplomat."
