Portsmouth woman charged with theft of checks cashed for $9,000, police say

JAMES CITY - A Portsmouth woman whom police say stole checks from a relative in James City and cashed them for $9,000 was arrested Monday and charged with a felony.

Shamecka J. Belle, 35, is charged with larceny of bank notes, according to Stephanie Williams-Ortery with James City police.

Williams-Ortery said that on June 27, a woman reported to police that a relative, identified as Belle, had stolen four checks from her checkbook, then forged and cashed them. Police noted that the checks totaled $9,000.

It's believed the checks were stolen in March, according to Williams-Ortery. She said they were cashed between March and June.
