Along Richmond Road in Toano is a barbecue restaurant with family roots.
“We have quite a bit of background in the restaurant business. Our father owned a Cinema Cafe in Hampton. Jason worked in the kitchen and I worked the concessions,” said Jon Wade, who co-owns Two Drummers Smokehouse with his brother Jason.
Two Drummers Smokehouse won the The Virginia Gazette’s 2017 Best of Williamsburg contest for the Best Kept Secret category.
The brothers, who used to perform for the Colonial Williamsburg’s Fife and Drums, opened the restaurant five years ago.
“That’s where the name Two Drummers comes from,” Jon Wade said.
Both brothers also used to work at local restaurants in the area, including Corner Pocket and the Blue Talon Bistro.
“Despite being brothers, we work well together. Sometimes we bang heads, but sometimes drummers bang heads,” Jason Wade said.
Two Drummers Smokehouse’s menu includes fried green tomatoes, barbecue salmon tacos, cornbread and catfish.
“We kind of dove into the barbecue business,” Jon Wade said.
Jon Wade said the pulled pork and beef brisket are popular items. The dessert menu is also extensive, featuring pecan pie, carrot cake and bread pudding.
The brothers want customers to feel the family atmosphere as soon as they come through the doors.
“I want people to walk in and feel like they’ve walked into our house,” Jon Wade said.
“We want people to feel like a part of our family,” Jason Wade said.
