Police: Three minors set First Colony Marina boats on fire

JAMES CITY — Three minors are accused of setting an Aug. 24 fire that destroyed two boats and scorched three others at First Colony Marina, said James City County fire officials, in a news release.

Fire officials didn’t name the James City County minors charged with arson. It isn’t clear whether they will face additional charges. . They were being held at Merrimac Juvenile Detention Center Friday.

The morning of the blaze, James City County firefighters were called to the First Colony Marina along the James River and found two boats ablaze in dry dock and three others with fire damage, officials said.

A 16-foot sailboat and a 23-foot pleasure boat were destroyed during the incident. No injuries were reported, county fire officials said.

As investigators worked at the fire scene, they discovered several other boats had been vandalized, James City County Fire Marshal Kenny Driscoll said.

Between 15 to 20 boats were ransacked, with items from them thrown around the boats and areas surrounding them, Driscoll said. Someone also sprayed and emptied fire extinguishers on several boats, he added. The minors charged with arson were not facing any other charges related to the vandalism at press time late Friday.

Several attempts Friday to reach authorities at the First Colony Marina were unsuccessful.

The boat fires and vandalism are still under investigation and county officials asked anyone with information on the fires to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
