Since 1974, communities across the country have celebrated National Volunteer Week, which starts on April 10 this year, to honor the people who accomplish the extraordinary through volunteer service. As a Membership Specialist with Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast, I would like to thank the nearly 6,000 women and men in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina who give countless hours as Girl Scout volunteers and dedicate themselves to building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place.

Girl Scout volunteers fill many roles. They are guides, mentors and cheerleaders who show girls that they’re capable of more than they ever imagined. Our volunteers lead girls through exciting adventures on the high ropes course at Camp Skimino. They help girls, who may not otherwise have the opportunity to leave our corner of Virginia, travel to destinations throughout our country and the world. Girl Scout volunteers teach our girls invaluable life skills. They encourage girls to connect with their church and community. And volunteers mentor our young leaders through the process of earning challenging awards like the Girl Scout Gold Award. Volunteers are essential to all parts of Girl Scouting.

Again, thank you to our Girl Scout volunteers and to all of the people who give back and make our community a great place to live, work and play.
