Parties not willing to compromise

The Virginia Gazette

Everyone wants safety and reasonable regulations when it comes to gun control, right? Action in the U.S. Senate Monday night seems to say something different. The horrendous crime committed by a terrorist in the Orlando night club has re-ignited the demand for more regulations, rightfully so. First, let's be completely honest: addressing guns is akin to addressing a symptom, not the disease. Do we blame the clippers or scissors for a bad haircut? Do we blame the fork or refrigerator for being overweight? Four proposals came to the Senate floor, two from Democrats, two from Republicans. Votes were all on party lines. Democrats refused to agree with Republicans for lesser versions of their own proposals; their moral stance on gun control is subordinate to their politics. The Democrats' hatred for Republicans outweighed their concern for the safety of the public.
